December 2015 Athlete Of The Month- Jonathan Johnson
When did you start CrossFit?
I started in May of 2012. I met Ashley and saw all these strange people running around downtown carrying medicine balls. My curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to check it out. Then I was at my old gym one day and I ran into an old friend and he was in great shape. He told me he was one of those crazy med ball runners, so I joined. I soon became one of the weird people running around downtown with a medicine ball.
Were you exercising before CF? If so, tell us about your typical workout.
I was exercising but I had a much different exercise routine. I worked out about 3 or 4 times a week doing circuit workouts. I’d do a leg day, a chest and tri day, and a back and bi day. I would sprinkle in some ab workouts. I did a couple of the local boot camps and I was very active in sports, which I considered my cardio. I never felt like I was getting enough out of my workouts. I wasn’t getting stronger and I did not like my physique.
What was your very first CF workout?
My first wod was to run a 10k. Prior to this I had only run one 5k. Run is being used loosely because I think I walked most of it. I showed up and it was me and Mitch Sawyer. I think it was a morning class or maybe early afternoon. Ashley graciously reduced it to a 5k for me and I think Mitch still beat me. Two weeks later was Memorial Day and we did Murph. I was already pretty sold on CF but, to be honest, Murph almost convinced me that this wasn’t for me.
Describe that experience in three words.
I hate running.
What is your favorite CF exercise?
Probably double-unders, but I like a lot of what we do.
Your least favorite?
Definitely thrusters. Satan invented thrusters.
What results have you seen since starting your CrossFit journey?
I have seen remarkable results. I’ve lost weight, down about 15 lbs from when I started. My body type completely changed. I’m much stronger across the board. I think my first CFT was 695 which was in November of 2012. Today it is 875. I’m hurt less, better at the sports I like to play, feel better, run farther…you name it, it’s better since I started CrossFit.
What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
In the last month I have PR’ed all of my lifts and I finally got over 300 on the back squat which was a goal for a long time. This year I got butterfly pullups down. It was pretty dumb that I hadn’t gotten these sooner but I just never committed to working on them until the beginning of this year.
What CF goal are you working towards?
I think I am more focused on improving my nutrition currently. I’m also working on improving my bench press. We don’t isolate the chest too much in our wods, so I am trying to get an extra lift in every week.
What do you like most about CrossFit Lake Charles?
The people and the clock. I am very competitive and this type of workout works for me because there is always someone or something with which to compete. If the people that I am close to aren’t in my class, then their times/weights are on the board and I have a goal to hit. I could never match the intensity of our workouts on my own. The people in the gym and that clock push me to work harder than if I was in a normal gym on my own.
Gumbo or Steak
John 16:33. It is Jesus talking so it is a quote. “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace, in this world you will have trials and suffering, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”
Anything you’d like to add?
I really appreciate our box and our coaches. They keep me motivated especially when I lack the motivation on my own. Ashley has a great way of instructing that doesn’t make you want to throw something at her…I appreciate that. I’ve gotten a ton out of CrossFit in the past three years. I like that this is something my wife and I can do together and we are both pushed to our own limits. Thanks for picking me and I hope this is just the beginning of my personal fitness journey.
Thoughts from CFLC on Jonathan…….
Jonathan walked into CrossFit already a pretty active guy (which we don’t get a lot of; it’s either weight loss people are after or revisiting a former active self) and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching him explore and benefit from what we have to offer. He has constantly been improving over the last three years (has it already been THREE?!?), competed in a few local competitions, even upd his game in basketball! Always on the up and up but it’s these last few months that really stick out to me in Jonathan’s time at CFLC. I’ve been constantly up on the ladder erasing old lift numbers and writing new, heavier ones. He’s often our top male finisher of the day and generally RX’ing anything I throw out there. The best, most surprising improvement has been him signing up for the last paleo challenge and then winning the dang thing! You’re looking lean and mean, Mr. Jonathan, and it looks GOOD on you! Congratulations on all of your many accomplishments. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life, for bringing in your wife (equally badass) and for your hand in making that sweet, sweet little Faith! Forever grateful to have you guys in our Family.
